Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

Believe it or not, but spring is officially here! Here are a few items to check off your spring home maintenance checklist:

Inspect your roof for any damage.

The winter months can be particularly harsh on your home with the snow, wind and cold weather. Check your roof for any curled or missing shingles and contact a professional for repairs.

Clean your gutters.

Clean any leaves and debris from your gutters to ensure proper drainage. If your gutters are clogged, your home could be at risk for water damage.

Check your yard for good drainage.

April showers bring May flowers, but they also can bring yard flooding. Your soil should slope away from foundation walls at least six vertical inches over 10 feet to keep mold, mildew, termites and basement leaks out of your home.

Check your foundation and foundation vents.

Home maintenance can be tedious, but it will save you in the long run. Walk around the perimeter of your home to inspect foundation walls, floors and concrete for any cracking or deterioration. If you find any cracks, contact a professional for repairs. Additionally, check your foundation vents and screens. Small critters and creatures can make your home their home by crawling through foundation vents. Clean your vents and screens of any debris and check for holes to keep small animals out.

Add some curbside appeal to your home.

Check your home for any peeling or cracked paint. Scrape off and spot paint the damaged areas.

Trim branches, shrubs and trees.

Spring is a great time to trim the branches of trees and shrubs that hang over your home. Branches should be kept approximately five to seven feet away from your home to prevent moisture from forming on your roofing and siding.

Review your insurance policy.

While you’re maintaining the exterior of your home and doing some spring cleaning, consider reviewing your insurance policy with your independent agent. Did you buy or sell expensive jewelry recently? List it or remove it from your policy. Have you evaluated your assets lately? Consider umbrella insurance.
