Keeping Your Home Safe While Away on Vacation

We all have that list of must-have essentials that you can’t forget to bring with you on vacation: passport, ID, phone charger, wallet, etc. However, many people don’t think about how to keep their home safe while they are away on vacation. Follow our tips for protecting your house while you’re away and enjoy your vacation with peace of mind.

Make use of smart devices to keep a watchful eye on your home.

Luckily for us, we have the ability to keep watch on our homes even when we’re not there. Installing cameras on your property such as a camera doorbell system or outdoor camera will allow you to see what is going on around your house from your smartphone. Indoor cameras are also available if you want to keep an eye on what is going on inside while you’re not there. See our article on Smart Home Devices to see what they can do for you.

Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your house.

Let trusted neighbors and friends in the area know when you will be away from your home, and ask them to keep an eye out for anything irregular or out of the ordinary. If you feel comfortable, consider leaving them a key to your home just in case.

Pause your mail deliveries if you will be gone for an extended period.

An overflowing mailbox or doorstep can be a telltale sign of a vacant home, which can attract thieves. If you are worried your mail will stack up while you’re gone, ask a friend or neighbor to grab it, or visit the USPS website and make use of their hold mail service. Fill out this short form, and USPS will hold your mail until your return.

Set timers on the lights in your home.

If you want to keep your house from appearing empty even from a distance, try plugging your lights and lamps into timers. Most timers plug into a regular wall outlet and are programmable to whatever length of time is desired. They are available online and in most hardware stores.

Wait on the social media posts.

It is always tempting to post fun photos from your vacation, but posting your location publicly online can bring attention to your absence from your house. This can put you at risk for burglary and other dangerous situations, so it is best to save those posts for when you return and can keep a better eye on your property.

Use our tips while preparing your home for vacation and enjoy the peace of mind and relaxation you deserve!
